In the story, Paul and Silas encounter a slave girl who has a spirit of divination. She followed them around, announcing the Word of God. Although this sounds good, she drew attention to herself and, in effect, to Paul and Silas. Many people bore witness to this for several days. Paul became very annoyed by her following them around. But instead of getting angry or turning her away, he cast out the demon possessing her. This action led to Paul's and Silas's arrest and imprisonment. They were stripped, beaten, and flogged with rods before being imprisoned. Despite their sufferings, they prayed and sang hymns to God.
An earthquake shook the jail so severely that the doors opened, and the prisoners' chains fell off. This sudden freedom could have led many prisoners to escape, but Paul and Silas stayed put. The jailer was terrified and about to kill himself, thinking the prisoners had fled. But Paul called out and assured him they were still in jail. Moved by their act of faith, the jailer asked Paul what he must do to be saved, and Paul told him to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. The jailer and his entire family were baptized.
